Review of 13 T-Shirt Companies Service Records – Better Business Bureau

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) was founded to act as a middle man between consumers and businesses. The BBB provides business reliability reports, dispute resolution, truth in advertising services, and consumer/business education. Member businesses have to pay annual dues and have certain rules they must follow. If they break the rules then their accreditation can be revoked. Regardless of a whether or not a company is accredited, the BBB will retain records of any complaints towards a company and what actions that company took to resolve the issues.

I compiled summaries of the larger t-shirt companies on the web that I frequently blog about. Issues with customers are bound to happen and the BBB does not really rate companies on the number of issues but how a company deals with accusations or issues. Companies can get either a satisfactory or unsatisfactory rating and below is a description of both.

Summary of a Satisfactory Record

A business identified in our report as satisfactory has, based on BBB files, been in business for at least one year, and has voluntarily provided the BBB with all information requested about the business and its product or service. If any complaints have been received about the business, their number has not been considered by the BBB to be extreme, given the nature of the company’s business and the volume of business transacted. Complaints are also generally typical of what might be expected for this type of business. A business stated to be satisfactory has not been the subject of any recent law enforcement actions concerning its dealings with the public. If the business has been contacted by the BBB about its advertising or selling claims, it has modified or substantiated its practices to the BBB’s satisfaction. In addition, the BBB has a clear understanding of the company’s business, and the business is not in an industry which has raised significant marketplace concerns.

Summary of an Unsatisfactory Record

A company has an ‘unsatisfactory business performance record’ with the BBB is based on the experience reflected in BBB files. The file condition results when the company has failed to resolve or respond to complaints, repeatedly failed to respond or resolve issues in a timely manner, failed to resolve the underlying issues for a pattern of complaints, failed to honor their commitment to mediate or arbritrate disputes or honor mediated agreements or arbitrated decisions, failed to substantiate, modify or discontinue false advertising claims that are challenged by the BBB, or failed to discontinue unauthorized use of the BBB name and logo, a Federally protected trademark.

Individual T-Shirt Company Service Reviews

Of the thirteen t-shirt companies reviewed only one company had an unsatisfactory business rating and it just so happens to be the biggest t-shirt company out there. Cafepress currently has an unsatisfactory rating but its not because of the number of complaints that gave the company an unsatisfactory rating, it is that Cafepress " failed to resolve the underlying issues for a pattern of complaints". Zazzle actually has almost 3x as many complaints but has a satisfactory record because they have addressed the majority of issues brought to the BBB. ChoiceShirts was the only company to have no complaints in the past three years.

    Custom Ink has cool software but that’s about it. I ordered and waited for my shirt…and waited…and waited. And after FOUR, yes four calls, with their apathetic Customer Service agents (one named James), I was told a number of things: that the order hadn’t been shipped, that it was shipped but hadn’t left the warehouse properly (?), or was just lost. I was just told that they will reprint another T-shirt and send it. We’ll see.

    Take your business elsewhere is my advice.

    I can sympathise with the difficulties in producing ‘one offs’ cost effectively to a satisfactory standard on this scale. I think a large number of dissatisfied customers put it down to experience rather than complain.

    US T-shirts is not mentioned here, BUT BUYER BEWARE!!! I purchased a shirt from them and it never arrived. The company took shortcuts and didn’t have package insured. When I asked for a refund, they stuck me with the shipping! I never even got the package. Not to mention the man, Dave, was unprofessional and rude.
    Please if you are reading this looking for a good company, please be aware you may not have a good experience with this company.

    AVOID INTERSPACE180 (a T-Shirt company).

    They do NOT stand behind their products.

    They refuse to give an exchange when they send their customers a defective product.

    In my initial contact with them, they said they would send out a replacement “ASAP”. It never was sent and they refused to respond after that, even to the BBB.

    Their website says: “Interspace180 tshirts will gladly accept returns on any order for any reason if you are not satisfied; we only ask that you let us know the reason so that we can improve our products or service.”
    …AND…”If for any reason you’re not completely satisfied with us or our teeshirts – PLEASE CONTACT US”.

    Even after the BBB was involved to resolve the issue of a manufacture defect, Interspace180 still refused to exchange the T-Shirt for a non-defective one.

    The saying: “If it sounds to good to be true, it most likely is.”

    The same is true for companies that over-promise to guarantee you’ll be a satisfied customer.

    These types of companies should be avoided at all costs.
    They never live up to their word.

    By the way, the BBB has given Interspace180 the rating of “Unsatisfactory”.

    The last response they sent to the BBB about my request to get the defective T-Shirt replaced was “this buyer is attempting to extort us”.

    The BBB was the mediator and has a record of all that was said on both sides. They know Interspace180′s statement is not true, and that they lie about bending over backwards to back their products.

    Take you business elsewhere. It’s not worth dealing with deceptive companies that don’t stand behind their products.

    Just wanting to comment on Interspace180 mentioned by Jeff above…my experience with them was just the opposite.I ordered 2 T-shirts and 2 hoodies from them in SEP 2011.They arrived within 14 days, (as stated on their website) – as I was an International customer, not U.S. domestic.There was a problem with one T-shirt, which had slight damage on one sleeve.I e-mailed Interspace180, and they asked me to submit an e-mailed photo of the damage as proof of my claim.I did this, and received a reply with an apology, and an offer that I could keep the damaged T shirt for free and they would send a replacement one as well for me, which they duly did and I received it within 7 days.At all stages in my e-mail contact with Interspace, they were friendly, helpful and efficient.I certainly had no complaints with their replacement policy, and was a satisfied customer.
